Prime pick from the Werk Discs camp delivering the first 12" from new signing Lone. The more clued up beat heads among you will remember his 'Lemurian' album from last year, a set which recieved critical acclaim from many corners of the industry falling for his sun-shot blend of post-Dilla hip-bop and shimmering synthlines akin to the likes of Flying Lotus or Werk bloke Lukid. 'Joyreel' is eerily reminiscent of prime Boards of Canada and classic ...

Martyn & 2562-Yet Bw Kontrol

"Tectonic rope in the talents of 2562 and Martyn for a brand new series of
Tectonic Plates and another dub-tech stepping excursion onto the
dancefloor. Martyn's 'Yet' slots neatly into his well loaded canon
specialized sound, using the signature breaks from his Applepips and 3024
releases to build a floaty stepper with deeply dubbed atmospherics
stripping away much of the melodic excess of previous tracks to leave a
fresh and spacious riddim that just OWNS it. 2562's 'Kontrol' on the flip
sticks with a paucity of elements from a disinfected 808 drum palette to
stealthy subs and melancholy pads to create perfectly spatialized
syncopations ripe for mixing with similarly kinked beats. Needless to say
- it's absolutely deadly. Oh, and special mention to the subs on this one,
make sure you've got a decent speaker setup or you're going to miss half
the fun. KILLER!"

Pattie Blingh And The Akebulan 5 2562 & Samiyam Remixes

Seriously sick little 10" here from Pattie Blingh aka Stones Throw's
Georgia Anne Muldrow, remixed by the awesome 2562 and Flying Lotus
collaborator Samiyam. Dave Huismans does his skipping broken
beat-cum-dubstep 2562 thing on his mix of Brother:the point, taking Ms
Blingh's sweet soul vox and encasing them within a fractured broken beat
revision much more velvety than anything else he has produced under this
name to date. The beauty of his 2562 project lies in the bottomless bass
and super sharp beat editing which falls somewhere between the clipped
broken beat styles of 4 hero's Dego and the stripped steppers of Kode 9,
making for a deliciously taut yet utterly loose style that's so easy to
fall into - its just mighty mighty stuff. Samiyam takes the original
into wonky downbeat territory on his mix, turning in a off kilter
killer, full of melting synths and hazy stoned rhythms to beautifully
complement Ms Blingh's vox, but sounding even better on the instrumental
version. Limited copies

Nobody Presents Blankblue- Dive

Lush West coast soul pop from the sunny minstrel
Nobody for Ubiquity with the Dive EP, but what y'all
need to be checking is the killer Flylo remix nestled
on the B-side.
Nobody's Blankblue project is a collaboration with
colleague Niki Randa from the indie record store they
both work at in Long Beach, CA. The project is based
on the idea of an Armageddon initiated by a massive
earthquake off the wets coast of USA set sometime
in the future, and the only survivors are able to live
and breathe in poisoned waters, to paraphrase an
incredibly convoluted and surreal tale from the mind
of Nobody's Elvin Estela. The music itself is a swirling
current of downbeat west coast hiphop psychedelia in
the fine tradition of Nobody's previous outings and is
definitely worth a check for the flower power leftovers
out there.
For all the here-and-now crew, you have to check the
amazing Flying Lotus remix, as the beat machine
manages to morph Nobody's lush composition into dense
layers of unravelled breaks and electrnic gurgles sounding
uncannily like seagulls or possibly psychotropic induced
fish farts, i'm not sure which. The most useful track here is
probably the instrumental Flylo version, which drops Randa's
slightly cloying vocals and allows the full majesty of this
special beat to really take form.

Gaslamp Killer & Free The Robots - The Killer Robots

Obey follows up their lauded A-Trak project with this
beats excursion from two of LA's finest: Free The Robots
and Lab's own Gaslamp Killer. Free The Robots starts off
the EP with the maniacal psyche beats of "Clocks and
Daggers." Wicked stuff for the horror-minded. GLK tags in
with "Show Stopper," a heavily Indian flavored track with
that tricky drum programming that we expect from this
dude. FTR tags back with "The Bearded Lady Theme," a
bluesy, playful number that harks back to their first EP
release (also available digitally at the lab). GLK comes
in for the finale, "Zalim," a thick number that will take
you to the back alleys of Mumbai.

Build an Ark- You've Gotta Have Freedom
Build An Ark is a Los Angeles based creative soul-jazz ensemble that was formed by producer Carlos Niño (Ammoncontact, Hu Vibrational, Temple Bar Records) and singer Dwight Trible (of the Pharoah Sanders Quintet) during the hysteria that came post 9-11 in an effort to encourage peace and love in the world.
Build An Ark has made a very complete and flowing recording, performing original compositions by members of the collective such as Phil Ranelin’s “Vibes From The Tribe”, Adam Rudolph’s “Conversations” and Derf Reklaw’s “Nu Baya Roots”. Also Improvisational pieces with themes of peace and love and interpretations of tunes that Niño considers “timeless classics” such as Pharoah Sander’s “You’ve Gotta Have Freedom” and Stanley Cowell’s “Equipoise” were recorded. Mixed like a radio show, PEACE WITH EVERY STEP is a concept album that is clear in the title and in the message.
With Trible as lead vocalist, Niño recruited celebrated pianist/composer Nate Morgan (long time member of Horace Tapscot’s Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra,) trombonist/composer Phil Ranelin (co-founder of the legendary Detroit based Tribe Records,) hand drummer/percussionist/composer Derf Reklaw (original member of the Chicago based ensemble The Pharoahs,) hand drummer/percussionist/composer Adam Rudolph (who works extensively with Yusef Lateef,) and a cast of other greats including violinist/composer Lesa Terry, poet Peter Harris, bassist/guitarist/composer Baba Alade, bassist Trevor Ware, percussionist Andres Renteria, and Joshua Spiegelman on flute and saxophone. Along with this group are the Build An Ark singers who also hand clap and play percussion.

Carlos Nino And Friends-High With A Little Help From

Fans of Carlos with know from his work with Build An Ark, The Life Force, AmmonContact, Hu Vibrational, What’s The Science?, Carlos Y Gaby, Mia Doi Todd and many more that when we’re talking friends, he’s got access to a whole orchestra stretching from hip-hop atheistic, to acoustic folk, modern classical and minimal ambient; and he manages to squeeze all this into High With A Little Help From.
And fans of his Spaceways Radio Show (Spaceways KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles) will know he’s as likely to play some classical music as The Long Lost, or Mulatu Astatke (don’t forget the FLY podcast HERE) as The Beatles, CSNY as Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders or Arthur Verocai or Joyce or any other Brazilian loveliness; you get the idea. So even as this album is mostly on a relaxed downtempo mood, expect inspiration to come from any musical avenue.
At one extreme, the track ‘Friends’ goes from a tribal percussive to experimental drone (featuring an explosive short burst of the beautiful Dwight Trible) to the gentle acoustic guitar breeze of ‘Rabbit Island’. These two tracks are the longest on the CD with the rest being shorter “collages” of sound as the concept for High With A Little Help From started in 2006 when Carlos was working on new tracks with members of Build An Ark and his other friends that was on Love Is The Answer.
Not that this is a Love Is The Answer Vol 2 as it’s far more ambient and experimental that is more sample based but taken from a live sessions; like outtakes but more cohesive.
Niño is so much of a driving force in the musical community of LA, as much an organizer (like the Luckman shows) as producer, arranger, composer and musician. The African rhythms on ‘Aquarius’ fade into the film score of ‘Lonely Joined By Happy’; ‘With Azul’ is gentle guitar folk (Azul is Carlos’ son) compared to the ‘9 Moons Full’ experimental modal space jam beats. Our man certainly is a cosmic space warrior and there are two wonderful short tracks on this album, ‘Ants And Elephants’ and ‘9 Moons Return’ that nod at a Ra and Alice Coltrane in an ambient way.
This album is the antidote to Dorian Concept’s When Planets Explode and both are destined to be as influential as each other in their different ways; Carlos yes, yes your music is absolutely beautiful.

Sun Ra Dedication The Myth Lives OnA

Sun Ra was certainly one of the most controversial yet most entertaining personalities of modern jazz. The bandleader, composer and keyboardist who claimed to be an extraterrestrial from the planet Saturn led his Myth-Science Solar Arkestra into zones far removed from standard jazz fare.
Sun Ra was born Herman "Sonny" Blount in Birmingham, Alabama, between 1910 and 1916, maybe 1914 and made an impressive career whilst recording countless albums (for his bio have a look at artistdirect.com or eyeneer.com). As a dedication to Sun Ra and in remembrance of the tenth anniversary of his death on May, 30th 1993, Dutch label Kindred Spirit, a sub-label of Rush Hour Recordings, releases The Myth Lives On.
Even though this project sees musicans and producers from different musical angles doing cover versions of Sun Ra songs the result still sounds coherent and offers an interesting opportunity to get familiar with Sun Ra and his music.
There are the odd and somehow spaced-out Space Chords 1-5, interludes recorded by the Francisco Mora's Outerzone Band, a former drummer of Sun Ra's Arkestra. The Outerzone Band also deliver a straight ahead jazz cover of Suny.
One of the highlights is Door Of The Cosmos by Build An Ark, who deliver a great version with soulful vocals, flute, handclaps and overall great more organic instrumentation. Also very good is Saga Of Resistance by Theo Parrish, although this sounds more like Theo Parrish does on most of his records, i.e. a slow hypnotic house driven beat with some vocal effects.
Offworld turns Astro Black in a timeless modern soul gem with the inclusion of Vanessa Freeman on vocals (and you may remember what a good job Vanessa did for Nathan Haines on his Squire For Hire album).
King Britt brings us a downtempo jazz inspired version of Black (A Shade Of), Recloose ft. Jonathan Crayford has covered Paepulsariki as a laid back lounge influenced version.
Departure Point re-done by Mocky is also more relaxed and downtempo with a nice guitar.
And then there's also a broken beat influenced version of Nuclear War by Mustang and Love In Outta Space by Jimi Tenor and some -in my ears- more discordant versions by Yesterdays New Quintet (who also covered Nuclear War) and Philip Charles with deconStrUctioN of a new eRA, that comes as CD bonus track.
On the whole The Myth Lives On is an interesting offering that shows how much jazz music has evolved in recent years and it gives us some fine music from the borders of jazz, downtempo, lounge, house and soul. If you like your music more left-field this is definitely worth a listen.

Daedelus and Jogger -Friends of Friends Vol. 1
Daedelus is back again and whilst some compare his work to Flying Lotus, those in the know, (and if you don’t, check out his last London gig at the Big Chill House HERE), know how varied and eccentric his genre bashing beats are.
Easy for Daedelus as he called up Jogger (from ‘I Sent Off II Sus Percoll’ on the Exquisite Corpse album. Jogger are the duo of Amir Yaghmai (D’s High School friend and live band members of Alfred’s The Long Lost project with wife Laura) and Jonathan Larroquette and this is their first ever release. Not only that, long time friends and cat fans, husband and wife art duo Kozyndan came up with the cover art/t-shirt design; a fabulous five Friends of Friends.
Once again another killer vid by the big D, this time directed by Eli Stonberg
On Saturday he is joined by DJ Kaos who is huge on DFA, producing everything from techno to disco. For Cargo, he’s prepared an exclusive disco set so we’re told to expect deep grooves and mind bending bass lines. And then there’s, K**O (pronounced Kigo) who is another bass legend in Barcelona and is starting to tour the world with his own twists on B’more bass warp and much more. His mixes on the Desparrame blog and Samurai FM have earned him huge respect in the global community and he’ll be providing the link between our two headliners with a bass to disco set, (so he won’t be caught with Barca’s Savath Y Savalas in his set!)

Flying Lozus-Shhh EP

*STRICTLY LIMITED - 500 COPIES ONLY FOR THE WORLD* Diamond cut R'n'B and bass edits from production behemoth Flylo for all the white label fiending crew. First up is a digitally ground remake of Mr Oizo's 'Stunts', refracted through the psyched mind of Steven Ellison into a evil grinding hiphop number with some butter synth work in the closing stages, before slicing and dicing J Dilla's immense 'lightworks' into a barely recognisable fug of of banging sludge beats, and smacking RJD2's heavy funkwerks into some punchdrunk rhythms reeling with frayed beatwonk for a proper Flylo special. The flipside sets to a killer Madlib joint into a dubstep compatible number with fat bastard bass that will bowl over weak knees on a big rig, but the best is most definitely saved for last. Spinning Nelly Furtado and Timbaland's euphoric R'n'B smasha 'Promiscuous Girl' 180 degrees on it's axis into a far more sinister and affected cut, perhaps backing up the slackness warning more effectively than Timba's dance wilding original. It's an undisputably killer pack and should be out the door faster than Usain Bolt on a mission for more chicken nuggets. Y'all been warned! KILLER!!!!

Afta-1-The Time In Between

Lots of crispness in the beats here -- especially on "Time In Between" -- which mixes a spacey vocal bit with slow-stepping beats that have a nice old record sort of crackle! "Nightlight" has these weird stretched-out handclaps over UFO-like pulses -- very cool stuff, and grounded nicely with some rock-solid beats!

Clark-Growls Garden

The EP showcases a killer mix of styles between Body Riddle's rich depth and
some more slamming tracks a la Turning Dragon. It's some of Clark's best
material to date and has everyone here fired up for hearing more new material!
"On last year's 'Turning Dragon' album, Chris Clark shifted from intricate
electronica toward pummelling, Tresor-friendly techno. Now, he has managed to
combine the brute force of 'Turning Dragon' with the melodic sophistication of
his earlier work, and frankly it sounds MASSIVE. The snarling bass, kicking
breaks and waves of sound of the title track could teach the Chemical Bros a
thing or two about stadium sized dynamics, and five other electro, techno and
downtempo grooves are similarly hefty... it's simply awesome ? in every sense
of the word."

Shed- remixes

Given the spotlight on the in-form Martyn, the unwavering interest in the relentless invention of Surgeon, as well as the high regard for Shed's source material, this release suffers a little from the weight of expectation. And while it hardly disappoints, it falls just short of having the final edge necessary to exceed the sum of its parts.
Surgeon's remix begins forcefully enough, with thick analogue bass and whipping high end percussion that leaves no room for air. However, their combined rapid pace and choking density seems almost too fast and too heavy for the atmospherics which are left to toil half-strangulated in the background. This converts the original's soothing ethereal glides into a spooky horror soundtrack without some of the requisite suspense. Organic, messy and T++-esque, Surgeon's mix is complicated and fascinating, but it can also seem like two tracks playing at once rather than a unified whole.
Martyn's remix on the other hand is far more integrated. The emphasis lies on Shed's original mischievous melody with a typically crispy Martyn beat served up front in the mix, in place of the original's low lying scratchy rhythms. Of more variable success is a vocal sample repeating the title, which ranges from being a little overused to adding to the playfulness. The rest of the mix is, however, pure class with Martyn's arrangements and attention-to-detail second to none. by ra

DJ Koze - Let's Love

Koze cuts have been far too thin on the ground recently so it's a great pleasure to have this prime new slab on Areal offshoot International Records Recordings. It's very safe to say the man hasn't lost his deft touch when it comes to crafting a wicked little niche in the cracks between deep house, techno and German minimalism but with 'Let's love' he excels himself on a pure detroit house cut with a hefty dose of hi-tech German engineering in killer style. 'I want to sleep' sticks with the dope Detroit vibes ont he flip coming on like a Teutonic Omar-s with precise production and a wickedly deep and tracky rhythm that will be frying some serious heads. Well smart.

Berghain 03 Part I
Lionni's "Found a Place" rubs two loops up against one another for three minutes—one of disembodied vocals, the other a catchy piano. He fades out the piano loop halfway through, brings in another and then loops that for another two minutes while the vocals and a simple house beat pound away unawares. Needless to say, it's brilliant. Radio Slave's "Neverending..." is similarly striking, but focuses its sights on—per usual—the hypnotic power of one loop stretched out into infinity. At nearly 12 minutes, it's almost criminal that this man can hold your attention with a tiny descending bassline and the sound of a steampipe being hit with a velvet hammer. But that's exactly what he does. Two masters of minimalism in one place? Coby residentadvisorunt me in.

Ben Westbeech feat Karizma - Hang around remixes

Wahoo and Karizma are the latest pair to remix London soul shaker Ben Westbeech on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings imprint. First up, let me admit that I’m a bit biased – Wahoo, aka Dixon and Georg Levin, still have a special grip on me, especially earlier work such as their remix of ‘That Night’ featuring Vikter Duplaix on vocals. These guys might be getting the media eyeball at the moment, but they’ve been pushing a deeper soul sound much longer than most care to remember.
Which is why I was expecting a little more magic here. Their remix works a funk arrangement into the track alongside dollops of percussion and Âme-esque synth plunges, and the result will fit neat and deep at festivals like The Big Chill or Southport Fest. It’s nice enough, but my bet is that the new Wahoo album will be more exciting – best to hang around for that?
On the AA, ex-Basement Boy Karizma steals the show, stripping the niceties out of the track and leaving the soul and bollocks of it intact. There’s real depth and flavour here, and it just builds and builds: the pads are giddy, the vocal slices are wise and the corrosive beats will make you smile like a little kid with an unlimited supply of Lego. A future classic for true music lovers.

Afefe Iku-Mirror Dance Yoruba Soul

A really hypnotic little groove -- one that more than lives up to its compelling title in the way it folds back and reflects upon itself! The tune pulsates with a bit more energy than the usual single on Yoruba, but it's still got a richly organic feel -- beats that pulse and dip nicely, and these cool melodic moments that almost sound like they're coming from a balafon! The Yoruba Soul mix is a bit fuller, and somewhat deeper -- more dynamic, but still with enough care to keep the simple melody intact.

BSTC - Music For A Saturday Evening
Showcasing a wide musical range the BSTC pull from a variety of influences including: Quincy Jones, Tom Creed, Marvin Gaye, Jay Dilla, Phil Cohran, Norman Connors, Roy Ayers, Anita Baker, Gladys Knight, and Lauryn Hill to name a few.
BSTC breathes. From the first horn stabs on “40 Days” until the final piano keys on self titled track “B.S.T.C.” BSTC is perpetual movement, effortlessly traversing the musical terrain from disco to soul to jazz…never standing still, the music takes you on an international flight from the south side of Chicago across the Atlantic to the dimly lit clubs of Lagos and due west to the thriving Sáo Paulo scene. Never an unwelcomed guest or an out of place intruder, BSTC builds a home in each musical milieu and allows listeners to drop by for visit.
BSTC is freedom. Free of the would-be constraints of definitions and music genres, BSTC does what feels right and what sounds right. This free flow of music was not conceived in a corporate boardroom as part of some dollar-driven marketing plan. BSTC’s music is authentic and true to the deep roots of the genres it envelopes, but it is never confined or caged in to a particular era, feel or aspect of this truly universal language. BSTC’s movement through musical worlds is as natural as the movement of people…always growing, but never forgetting from where we came.
BSTC lives. If music is meant to touch us, to take us places and to teach us, then BSTC fulfills its promise. Songs such as “Jazz In Outer Space” and BSTC’s standard “Agua De Beber” use sound to paint picturesque landscapes, leaving us enriched and better for the experience.
On November 4th the BSTC will move you, soothe you…and most of all, groove you with their debut album Music For A Saturday Evening.
