Slugabed - Superphreak/ODB

This year is going to be a good year if we travel the path we’re on now. A new talent from Bristol is coming from the Glasgow label Stuff records (from the Rustie releases Jagz The Smack and Cafe De Phresh). Slugabed (http://www.myspace.com/slugabedmusic), a 19 year old producer! We’re going to hear a lot more of this guy this year! He starts with a limited white label teaser featuring his inspirators: Rick James and Ol Dirty Bastard. Slugabed’s tracks moves like his equevalents Rustie, Joker, HudMo between styles, wonky, hip hop, abstract beats and so on. Stuff records make more big steps in the game with the hotly tipped 19 year old Slugabed crashing in with two groove juxtapositions for the dance. One side tackles the Rick James classic 'Super Freak' with odd results, plonking the vocals over a neon freak beat winding in somewhere between Jamie Vex'd style hypeR'n'B and Rustie-knacked hiphop, while the flipside zooms Ol' Dirty Bastard into a year 2030 style beatwork sounding like Flying Lotus drinking neat vodka with the Skweee crew. His tracks have already found their ways into the boxes of Various Production, Mark Pritchard, Benji B and Mary-Anne Hobbes and we expect to hear a lot more from this fella.

Geiom feat. Marita- Remissin part2

Geiom offers up his vocal collaboration with Marita 'Reminiscin' for some brilliant remix treatments from Shackleton and Skream. Shackleton's remix continues to distance him from the rest of the dubstep pack with another sub 130bpm effort, riding syncopated 4/4s and rock hard sub drops that seriously set this man apart from everyone, nevermind the dubstep crew. The evolution of this guy's work continues to amaze us and makes anything he touches an essential purchase. The other reason you really need this 12" is Skream's mix on the flip, utilising Marita's vocals to the maximum and attaching a dutty rhythm of broked up 2step with dance wilding snare smacks and defined bass bruises swooping in the lower regions for a reconfirming return to the fray considering we haven't actually heard anything from this yout for a few months now. A massive 12". by bookmat

Geiom's Berkane Sol imprint drops his own original version of the killer cut 'Reminiscin' recently remixed by Shackleton and Skream and here given a true rerubbing by Kode 9 on the flip. Kamal Joory's original Geiomix is a rude steppin riddim sitting comfortably between a deeper strain of 4/4 bassline house and 2-stepped dub and provides the perfect cushion for Marita's luxurious vocal line, while Kode swerves all our preconceptions by coming with a teasing 2-step number in his inimitable style, featuring a disco lifted string intro and supremely sexy vibes that can't fail to work a good floor. Much like the previous Berkane sol 12"

Von D - Coquine

Smarter rave drops from Von D backed with an ace Tes a Rock remix. D's 'Coquine' initially sounds simialr to his 'Echolow' cut, which is no bad thing, with dub chords building over a powerful sub driven riddim chassis. Things get interesting after the second drop which literally inverts the common dubstep practice of harder-is-better with a lighter roll out and skipping pattern, a kind of sunshine after the rain if you will. Tes La Rock's effort is also up to Von D's high standards, sidestepping the rave with a deeper and more involving dubtech cut that puts his lauded production knowledge to very good use. Clever 12" for them that know.

Blue Daisy- Space ex

This is the very impressive debut release from one of London's best kept secrets, Blue Daisy. There's been a massive buzz about these two incredible tracks which sound uncannilylike the sublime offspring of Flylo and Burial. 'Space Ex' - featuring treated vocals from LaNote - is the soul-stunning A-side that sounds like the work of a hugely experienced producer, but if this really is a debut release then we'd recommend keeping a very close eye. It basically sounds like Flylo's 'Tealeaf Dancers' but with an instantly gratifying vocal that you'd normally associate with someone like Various Production in this context. The track breathes heavily with a beautifully subtle inhale/exhale compression technique lending a hazy balance of pressure undulating between spacious atmospheres and overcast tempestuousness until the fronts meet to precipitates a piquant Kraftwerkian melody. 'The Fall' on the flip is a purely instrumental cut, shorn of vocals to reveal the full majesty of Blue Daisy's production, sounding here like a garage/house hybrid rhythm that's been left in the midday sun to wither and wilt and then played from a carnival soundsystem three streets away. We're slightly baffled as to how this came through on Black Acre, a label usually associated with balls-out breakstep and murky plodders but all respect to them for bringing Blue Daisy to the attention of the wider world. One of the singles of the year? Most likely. by bookmark

Dublab Presents Echo Expansion

Produced to go along with the Dublab European tour this bumper album features some of the best Californian electronic talent right now and features all exclusive tracks pressed to wax for maximum enjoyment. Probably the most obvious draw will be the inclusion of a certain Flying Lotus, the Alice Coltrane nephew who recently dropped jaws everywhere with his 'Reset' ep for the Warp label, and certainly his contribution is without a doubt the best track on the compilation. With thick distorted Rhodes and what will soon be his trademark over-compressed beatplay he makes mincemeat out of the competition, staking out his claim on the wonky hip hop territory. Elsewhere we have a lovely retro slice of electronics from scene veteran DNTEL, some typically off-its-rocker Latin fuelled mentalism from Daedelus (and side project Adventure Time) and there's even an appearance from Life Force Trio who we'd totally forgotten about. A great record from beginning to end and something that's no doubt going to last about five minutes given the lineup - be quick.

ArtDontSleep presents... From L.A. With Love

Once in a great while a genuine musical scene is born. It doesn't start with any industry, huge amounts of money or celebrity status. It starts with creativity, forward thinking and integrity. In Los Angeles, one such scene was born and is drawing attention from around the globe. Cutting-edge electronic producers have been working diligently, true to their craft, creating music unlike any heard before. ArtDontSleep is an organization created by Andrew Lojero to expose this music to people who care. Promoting shows, both legal and illegal, into the early hours of the morning, ArtDontSleep created an underground community of music and art lovers. Combining visual art, live graffiti and unbelievable DJ sets, it has built its reputation throwing parties in lofts, under bridges and in warehouses. A variety of people come to enjoy the art – not because it's a “scene,” but because of their love for the arts and their desire to experience something new. With no sponsors and no corporate involvement, Lojero's undisclosed events attracted up to 2,000 people a night. ArtDontSleep Presents From LA With Love is a collection of new music from LA's most ingenious, original electronic producers, creating an exceptional record that is not only amazing musically, but is a true reflection of a brand new underground music scene. Also featured in the CD is one piece of visual art per song that represents the visual art interpretation of the song that inspired it. This CD is not a compilation but a collection of LA's finest artists. Many have achieved their own success and recognition, but ArtDontSleep Presents From LA with Love is the first time this expansive variety of visionaries have been brought together in one package. It is rare that movements come along that are as prolific as what is occurring in Los Angeles today. From Greenwich Village and San Francisco in the 60s, to the blues movement of Chicago, to the country movement of Nashville, each era marked a change in music and a change in the arts overall. The new movement now resides in The City of Angels.

Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue

Bibio shares the distinguished honor of being Boards of Canada’s favorite outfit. Boards of Canada also happens to be the favorite band of Bibio’s Stephen Wilkinson. There’s something detrimental within that exchange that nearly reeks of the narcissism inherent in Rivers Cuomo’s hiring of Ozma as an opening band because they sound just like Weezer. After all, there’s quite a bit that’s like Boards of Canada in all of the Bibio to date, particularly since the Scottish duo essentially flipped the tricks on Wilkinson’s Fi and one-upped them for BOC’s own The Campfire Headphase. As BOC learned and pilfered from Bibio, so to did Bibio from his icons, sometime magnificently.

This is not to say that Bibio hasn’t carved his own identity in the popscape with his obscured-by-time focal lens sheets of warbled-synth tape decay and its gauzy ethereal naturalism of recurrent cavernous acoustic strumming. If anything, they’ve become perhaps so distinctive that you could nearly set your watch to them, which is why Ambivalence Avenue’s attempts to branch out are only too welcome, even as the album regresses into a familiar idyllic indie-rockism more than it surprises with the shock of the new.

Being the third Bibio album of the year, and Wilkinson’s first for Warp, Ambivalence AvenueOval and Emeralds EP epitomized the nostalgic modus operandi of the project, while Vignetting the Compost (whose title hints at renewal amidst decay) complimented and built upon the complex textures and simple riffage of 2004’s Fi and 2006’s Hand-Cranked, translating the endless loops of those albums into actual structure. follows an EP and an LP that, together, coalesced into a culmination of the Bibio sound. The boardwalk stardust of the

Well, forget about structure, because Ambivalence Avenue contains straight up songs, the kind that resin-fingernailed indie kids go apeshit for. You know, the kind with three part harmonics and jaggedly razored hip-hop vocal samples and chiptune sound effects. On this avenue, all those sounds converge, though not necessarily in the course of the same song. Instead, they’re side-by-side characters who come to life like figures filling in the empty uniforms at the local Salvation Army.

Bibio holds on to the nostalgia for Ambivalence Avenue, but spreads it broader than production aesthetics and home-cooked folk. Ambivalence Avenue’s lyrics are wildly evocative and unfashionably romantic, showcasing what he’s taken away from a life of reading Whitman, as noted in his interview with PopMatters earlier this year. He meters adoration into 3-7-5 modas on the appropriately named “Haikuesque (When She Laughs)” and scorns those who don’t believe in love except as a “symptom of conformity” on “Jealous of Roses”.

The latter song follows the hazy neopsychedelia of the title track opener with some atypical garage-cassette-funk, which is filthy, ramshackle, and schooled in the Haunted Graffiti stylings of Ariel Pink. It’s a great moment of surprise, but it’s also one of the rare moments that harks back to Bibio’s obsession with sound wear and its relationship to the fragile course of memory. It’s a shame, because Wilkinson gives voice to many of these themes for the first time now that he’s thrown his own singing, which is quite good, into the mix. “Lovers’ Carvings” reflects on how physicality embeds memory into artifacts and leaves an eternal psychic imprint. Of writings etched into walls, he incants that “the end never was” and “the words have gone/ But the meaning will never / Disappear from the wall”. On “Abrasion”, he finds a talismanic quality in the corrosive knicks of human interaction with the material world, as if we were already an ancient culture for archaeologists to analyze. He identifies “the fumble marks around a key hole and/ the wedding ring scratches on a rail” with a forensic sentimentality rarely heard in the music of our go-go gadget culture.

Even an album ago, the prospect of a collection of Bibio tunes without Wilkinson’s patented production aesthetic would sound not only useless, but kind of terrible. Far from hip, Wilkinson’s saccharine plucking was often little more than comfort food dressed in complex texture, like hotel art remixed as conceptual avant-garde. Indeed, there are moments on Ambivalence Avenue, like the extended intro to “Lovers’ Carvings”, that tightrope between sunny-side psych-folk noodling and unadulterated Muzak.

As predicted, many have already offered back-handed praise to Ambivalence Avenue for its introductions of verses and choruses, making sure to comment on the negligence of Bibio’s previous experiments in light of this new “serious” project. But I would reject this kind of logocentric realigning of values. There’s no need to invalidate music that emphasizes textured field recordings and warm atmospherics over psych-pop structure just because the acoustic guitar is the predominant value of both fields. Truth be told, there’s benefits and disadvantages to both Bibio styles and the album puts it best when it outlines Wilkinson’s relationship to the music as ambivalent.

Even as enjoyable as the campfire clap-along of “Ambivalence Avenue” and the melancholy Neil Young-isms of “The Palm of your Wave” are, it’s a bit of a disappointment to hear tracks that sound so much like so many other things that are out there by a band that truly had a unique voice, even if that sound involved an exchange with Boards of Canada. There have to be thousands of bands out there doing folk-pop, and maybe only a handful who could feasibly compete with the aesthetic of Boards of Canada, as the two closing tracks of Ambivalence Avenue assuredly do.

That’s why it feels appropriate when the album throws in the occasional left turn, like the aforementioned “Jealous of Roses” or the Dilla/ Prefuse73-inspired instrumental hip-hop of “Fire Ant” and “S’Vive”. It’d take some mad science to mix all of Bibio’s elements, old and new, into a sound as definitive as the one he established over his first five years as an artist, but Ambivalence Avenue is a great fresh start. After three albums focusing primarily on the parochial and internal, Wilkinson is looking out. And the horizon, though distant and somewhat obscured by the residue of the past, and ambivalent as to whether it’s evidential of a sunrise or sunset, shows great promise for the perpetual present.

Dorian concept- Trilingual Dance Sexperience

Scorching face melters from the atom-smashing rhythm scientist Dorian Concept. 'Trilingual Dance Sexperience' is one of the tracks that will define electronic dance music in 2009. It's already appeared on Modeselektor's Get Physical mix, and has been slaying clubs everywhere from London to New York with what sounds like the culmination of the last 10 years of techno, grime, hiphop club music and cutting edge electronics attempting to race each other to the finishing line of the decade. Or in other words, it sounds like Shed jamming with Rustie and Squarepusher on Crystal Meth. Either way, it's fucking extraordinary. 'Tropical Hands' is essentially the downbeat version of it's hyper sibling, crushing hiphop beats under the force of his megaweight synthline exuberance, but really, you should just have the first track on repeat. Completely stunning!
